THREE NEW PROTON CENTERS PLANNED. TWO FOR ILLINOIS AND ONE FOR OKLAHOMA CITY.

Illinois newspapers reported last month that by 2010, there could be two proton treatment centers in that state, just within a few miles of each other. Northern Illinois University and Central DuPage Hospital are separately planning to build proton therapy centers in western DuPage County. That’s right, both in the same county. Northern Illinois University (NIU) has already secured most of the funding for their $159.5 million facility, which will be located in technology park, between Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the DuPage County Airport. About 10 miles east, Central DuPage plans to have their proton center completed at the same time at their Winfield campus. This facility will cost $140 million.

Both NIU and Central DuPage insist there is room for both Proton Treatment Centers. They note the density of the population nearby, roughly 8.5 million people live in and around Chicago, and their desire to draw patients from around the Midwest. Architectural plans are reported to be complete and equipment is on order for both facilities.

Oklahoma City Proton Center is on Schedule. The concrete foundation has been poured for the new $100 million, 55,000 square-foot proton treatment center in Oklahoma City, which is scheduled to open in the summer of 2009.
